How about giving your garden a facelift, just like your house? Gardening motivation peaks at the end of winter, but you don’t know where to start: here are our tips for tidy flower beds and an even more pleasant garden.
Find out how to beautify your garden with simple solutions and actions.
Do not use plastic
Tarps, flower pots and even garden hoses: plastic reigns supreme in the garden. How about banning it to reduce pollution, reduce waste and improve aesthetics?
A glass greenhouse, a metal watering can, a resin frame or tunnel, cardboard instead of plastic for tarpaulins, flower pots in an ecological design: there are many alternative solutions. Also make fertilizer and compost to avoid bags and bottles and make decorative labels for plants.
Keep compost and outdoor waste bins well hidden
Even in treated wood, the composter is not the most beautiful object to display! Give your trash can or trash cans a designated corner, hidden from view. Install a few cane fences and shrubs or a trellis with evergreen vines to liven things up (and hide them).
Maintain your plants
To beautify the garden, think pruning and cleaning: use spring to remove dry stems, cut back dead branches, weeds and scrape the ground around perennials. Identify frost damaged plants to replace.
Don’t forget mulch (mineral or natural) as a surface treatment: the result will be cleaner and you will protect yourself from late frosts.
Work the edges of the beds
Sharpness above all else: emphasize the edges of the beds by cutting the lawn flat with a shovel. Materialize the border by placing a row of bricks or paving stones. Place them in a trench corresponding to their height + 3 to 5 cm.
Choose plants wisely by size and color
The harmonious combination of colors and textures enhances the massif. Arrange it with graphic or tall plants (ball topiary or cordyline), then add volume with grasses or lavender. Dramatize with a star plant (Delphinium, Ornamental garlic).
Over the course of months, fill in the empty spaces with annuals (rule 2/3 annuals to 1/3 perennials).
When it comes to colors, go warm and cool with reds or blues, but always provide a counterpoint to avoid monotony.
Avoid excessive clutter
Do not disturb the peace of your garden with too many decorative elements or plants. First, observe the planting distances so as not to suffocate the plants. Then give your garden the Marie Kondo treatment by dividing plants that are too imposing (and offer them!) and declutter your decor. Also store your tools in the shed and other games in the outdoor boxes.
Replace exterior lighting
Your overgrown garden deserves effective outdoor lighting: solar or electric, invest in a lighting system that highlights your iconic plants and some decorative elements. Also take care of the light around the terrace to enjoy the long summer evenings.
Refreshed, tidy and highlighted, your garden will be the envy of people.
