Now that spring break is here, it’s time to think about how to prepare for the generous month of May when it comes to public holidays, while keeping an eye on your wallet.
This year, the spring holidays will be replaced by the month of May, full of public holidays. With Labor Day, Armistice and Ascension Day, the bridges will follow each other, offering the French an air chamber of decompression, preferably in the sun, between the spring school holidays and the start of the summer holidays.
The other side of the coin of this generous month of May: an increase in travel searches, which results in an increase in prices, especially airfares. If overall their prices for destinations “there are more accessible bridges in May compared to last year, it is still possible to leave without congestion », however, assures the travel comparator Liligo.

But don’t imagine that you can go to a white sand beach in Thailand for less than 250 euros for a return ticket. Affordable backup solutions that are – almost – just as attractive.

France is on the rise in Liligo’s list of cheapest destinations, with Toulouse in first place and Montpellier (2nd) at €132 and €136 for a return ticket. Still in the Mediterranean, Marseille and Nice are available for €160 and €184 respectively. Opportunities that the French should not like, “ as 67% of them said they wanted to travel to mainland France this year”according to Opinionway’s study for Liligo on travel trends in 2024.
Apart from France, foreign destinations around the Mediterranean offer prices that are still cheap despite the upward trend. You can get to Milan from Paris from 151 euros for a return flight. In the Iberian Peninsula, Barcelona starts at 173 euros, an amount that rises to 222 euros for Madrid, the most expensive city in the ranking after Porto and its 220 euros. On the other hand, Big Blue returns to Tunisia with an attractive price of 217 euros.

In May, the French want sunshine
Holidays are sacred to the French. It is therefore no surprise that in the ranking of the most sought-after destinations, ticket prices far exceed 250 euros.
This is the case of Marrakesh, available for an average return ticket of €346 and which this year has overtaken Lisbon (€229) in the ranking of the most popular destinations. Southern Europe, which is omnipresent in the 2023 ranking (with 8 out of 10 destinations), will have only 6 cities left in 2024, such as Rome (223 euros), Porto (220 euros) or Barcelona (173 euros). But thanks to its attractive prices “It remains a safe bet for French people looking for pleasant temperatures after winter. Although it is interesting to highlight the growth of more distant destinations such as New York (€554), Dubai (€535), Montreal (€483) or even Bangkok (€730)”deciphers Guillaume Rostand, spokesman for Liligo.
