When we think of summer, we imagine languid mornings spent reading, afternoons strolling along the river or enjoying the shade of a secluded part of a magical town, or evenings sipping local wine in warm squares. The one and only threat to this happiness? Crowds of people with crowded streets, packed bars and fully booked restaurants. A nightmare scenario that gradually appeared in many European cities after the start of the summer season.
Obviously, no one advised you to flee Rome, Lisbon or Barcelona. There are simply better times to discover the magic of these unmissable destinations. We’re talking more about finding a destination for summer that’s human-scale and less crowded. Here are five alternative holiday destinations in Europe that will keep you calm and relaxed.
Braga in Portugal
The oldest city in Portugal is also one of the least known. Although it often finds itself hidden in the shadow of its larger neighbor Porto, Braga alone is worth a stop. At the Tabique restaurant you will find local culinary specialties, stewed and often accompanied by potatoes, while at Dona Júlia, just outside the city, you will appreciate the elegant decor and seasonal cuisine made with local ingredients. To soak up Braga’s history, visit the Sé, Portugal’s oldest cathedral dating back to 1070, or stroll up to Bom Jesus do Monte, a shrine nestled at the top of a majestic staircase punctuated by stunning fountains.
Bordeaux in France
It’s not exactly unknown, but the city of Bordeaux is still less busy in the summer compared to other cities on the Atlantic coast not far away. Bordeaux has its wine, its estuary, but also pedestrian streets that promise you very beautiful walks, with monuments such as the Grand Théâtre, the Gothic tower of Pey-Berland or the Basilica of Saint-Séverin. You can also head inland to discover some of the country’s best châteaux and wine estates that are dotted around the Gironde.
