In the summer of 2023, more than 150 dehydrated cats and dogs were discovered in the apartment of a couple from Nice. Their son talked about his mother’s Noah syndrome, a disorder that results in excessive hoarding of animals.

Last summer in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), the police intervened in a neighborhood conflict. But after arriving at the scene, the police discovered that the couple was living with 159 cats and seven dogs on just 80 m2. Dehydrated, sick, all the animals were confiscated and taken to shelters. On Wednesday, April 3, the couple were tried at a court in Nice and given a one-year suspended prison sentence, 100,000 euros in compensation and a ban on owning animals.

“When we finish here, we have judges who listen to us”

It’s a victory for animal rights groups. “When we finish here, we have judges who listen to us”, welcomes Anne-Marie David, head of the Arpa association. Behind this case is Noah syndrome, a mental disorder that causes sufferers to accumulate pets in disproportionate proportions. It often takes very long months to care for rescued animals and tame them before we can hope to adopt them.
