Oradour-sur-Glane: Visit the village of martyrs differently

Guided tours have been offered for groups, especially schools, for almost a year now. From July 10 to August 31, it will be available to individuals who register on-site. “The feedback from the teachers is great, shows Babeth Robert, director of the Memory Center, it changes everything for a better understanding of places and events. We have therefore decided to extend this proposal to visitors of the permanent exhibition. »

Upon arrival at the Memory Center, visitors register for two departures at 10:15 a.m. or 3:15 p.m. Two groups of 50 people will be formed at 10:00 and 15:00. These visits will be carried out by approximately ten staff, including former Master2 students trained for this purpose. “On some summer days the attendance goes up to 4000 visitors with a very high number on Saturdays,” explains the director, on that day we will not be able to offer these visits. They may also be suspended during weather warnings (thunderstorms, heat waves, etc.) or in the event of force majeure.

A route through the Martyrs’ Village will be designed to allow the site to be discovered in a different way, with guided stops at certain locations such as the Exhibition Grounds, the Church and the Gallows.

Enter the intimacy of martyr families

Another event, the “Oradour Heritage Items” exhibition at the Oradour Memory Centre, launched on 6 April, continues. About 200 items collected after the massacre on June 10, 1944 are presented. Most of them are exhibited for the first time. Some are kept by the National Association of Families of Martyrs of Oradour-sur-Glane. Others come from the Memorial in the cemetery, some were transferred to the archives of the Memory Center, where they were inventoried and classified.

The exhibition “Oradour Objects in Heritage” presents 200 objects collected after the massacre of 10 June 1944 in the ruins of the village, most of which are on display for the first time.

Toys, glasses, knives, watches, school inkwells, dolls, wallets, bags, melted bottles… In their numbers, they materialize the mass slaughter of these 643 villagers.

This very moving exhibition allows visitors to enter into the intimacy of the families of the martyrs. With a deliberately sober scenography, without superfluous texts, each visitor absorbs the objects as so many moments of life and death.
