Europe is home to 63 of the world’s top 100 destinations, according to a new ranking.

Founded by a global market research company“Euromonitor International”, the Top 100 Urban Destinations Index, compares the tourism, sustainability and economic performance of metropolises around the world.

European destinations dominate the 2023 results, published this week, with Paris topping the list.

Madrid (Spain), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Berlin (Germany), Rome (Italy), Barcelona (Spain) and London (UK) are also in the top 10.

They are joined by only three non-European cities: Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (2nd place), Japan’s Tokyo (4th place) – its first top 10 ranking – and New York in the United States (8th place).

How are cities rated in the destination index?

Cities are rated based on 55 parameters in six key categories to arrive at an overall attractiveness score.

Categories include economic and business performance, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety and sustainability.

Points are awarded for things like tourism demand, accessibility, use of smart technology and conservation projects.

Paris is winning the award again thanks to continuous improvements being made ahead of the 2024 Olympics.

In the 10th position, London is ranked as the best tourist infrastructure in the world by the index, while Berlin’s “Off to B” campaign to promote tourism in outlying parts of the city helps it reach 6th place.

Which cities are in the top 20?
