The most beautiful village in France: Vénasque in Vaucluse

Among the various places we visit during our trip to France, we often hear that this or that city is one of them “the most beautiful village in France”. Under this designation is a legal association from 1901, which was born forty years ago to bring together all the small towns in France with a certain character, which are just waiting to be discovered…

Today, head south with the village of Vénasque in the Vaucluse department.

Facing Ventoux

Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking vineyards and scrub near Mont Ventoux, Venasque is a delightful medieval village. Like many cities in the region, its rich historical heritage is revealed through steep streets, golden stone houses, the Romanesque Notre-Dame church and the 6th-century baptistery.E century, which remains one of the oldest church buildings in Provence.

It must be said that the history of Venasque dates back to antiquity. The city was actually occupied by the Gauls, the Romans, the Saracens and a few others, with the remains of the walls and three towers still testifying to its tumultuous past…

And then, opposite is Mont Ventoux. The one, which is also nicknamed “Plyšátá hora”, because of its bare peak, majestically dominates the surrounding plain from its height of 1,910 meters. A place that visitors will appreciate because, among other things, a road has been built to access the top and marked hiking trails have been created for the greatest pleasure of pedestrians. Especially since once you reach the top, the panorama remains truly unforgettable…
