There are things we hear about more or less regularly without knowing – or having forgotten – what they correspond to. This is, among other things, the case of what we call “big five”.
The five most difficult animals to hunt
If you’ve ever been on a safari, you’ve probably heard of the famous ‘big five’.
Otherwise, you should know that these are the five symbolic mammals of the African continent. The most famous, if not the most majestic, and even originally the five most difficult and dangerous to hunt.
Because the term “big five” comes from the late 19th centuryE– beginning of XXE century. At a time when hunting in the African savannas was a matter of course, when several tens of thousands of elephants were killed in this way every year.
Although poaching exists today and hunting is still allowed in some places in a highly regulated manner, all African species, big five including, are protected. To the extent that some are even redundant in some countries, such as elephants in Botswana, whose population currently exceeds 100,000 individuals. Maybe a fair return of things…

- Black or white rhinoceros
- African leopard

Tourist argument
After hunting, today the “big five” is an argument used to highlight the safaris that can be undertaken on African soil. Several countries, each with parks and reserves, also boast five mythical species.
If Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa are among them, the leaders in safari and the destinations that come to mind first for this, other countries also have their “big five”. This is the case for Angola, Botswana, Zambia, Uganda, Namibia, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Malawi.
